NERD FIGHTERS AND KIVA LOANS

So. John Green and his brother Hank Green formed Brotherhood 2.0, a videoblog all the way back in January 2007. I was absolutely addicted ever since DESPITE the fact that I was on dial-up. Do you have any idea how awful this is?

So, they did this videoblog instead of emailing or writing or IMing for the whole year.

They called those of us who were addicted: Nerdfighters. This lovely term happened on February 17, 2007 when John posted this video. He sang the Nerdfighter’s theme song. How can you not be addicted to the antics of a man who sings the Nerdfighter theme song?

Being Nerdfighters in name only was not enough. So the brothers started the Foundation to Decrease WorldSuck. The foundation takes donations and then uses those donations to make the world less sucky.

That wasn’t enough.

The Greens began talking about being microfinanciers for business people in poor areas through the ultra-cool agency Kiva.org.

Even if having the term NERDFIGHTER somehow scares you or gives you hives or makes you long for strudel, you can also check out KIVA’s site all on your own. Or here.

I’m going to post some of Kiva’s info below. Because, you don’t have to be a Nerdfighter to be ultra cool. You just have to be ultra cool.

Kiva connects loan money to small businesses in the developing world. You loan out money ($25 and up) to a business of your choice. This helps poor, working people get a little closer to economic independence.

It usually takes 6-12 months for your loan to be repaid. Then you can reinvest it in another business or not.
Sometimes you get email updates from the business person you sponsored, which is really cool.

You can help someone like this:
